They were like an angry mob hunting an ogre in the woods as they exploded from Reba’s car. Penny stopped just long enough to pull Mable out of the backseat.

She stopped in the middle of the parking lot to address her aging hips.

“Go on without me, ladies,” she waved them on. “Just make sure you save a piece of that boy for dear old Mable!”

“We will!” Penny shouted as she tailed Reba up the sidewalk toward the door.

“Ready or not, here we —”

Reba’s cry was cut short by the sudden realization that strangling the evil Cretan was about to become much harder than she’d expected.

“Did you know it was him?” She turned and asked me.

“I don’t know who it is,” I said, stepping up onto the sidewalk with my mother, who was helping Mable navigate the step.

As I approached the door, the very uncomfortable truth hit me like a punch in the gut. Though, I’m sure it was nowhere near the punch in the gut Reba was feeling.

Sitting in a chair, handcuffs dangling from his wrists, his head hung low, was Reba’s boyfriend, Dillon.
